Commonwealth Bank freezes regional branch closures until 2030
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has committed to maintaining all its regional bank branches until at least December 2030. This decision extends the bank's previous commitment to halt regional closures until mid-2027.
CBA joins Westpac, which announced a similar moratorium on regional branch closures to 2030 late last year. The move follows significant community concern and a Senate inquiry regarding the loss of face-to-face banking services. Over the past decade, more than one-third of bank branches across Australia have closed.
CBA Chief Executive Matt Comyn stated that the move is intended to provide long-term certainty for customers, local businesses, and regional communities, which he described as central to the Australian economy.
