Commonwealth Bank of Australia shares face scrutiny amid economic shifts

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) shares have recently been trading around the $150 mark, prompting investor scrutiny regarding the bank’s valuation amidst shifting economic conditions. As Australia’s largest bank, CBA maintains significant market shares in mortgages, credit cards, and personal loans, serving over 15 million customers.

Investors are currently weighing CBA’s strong market position and digital banking investments against macroeconomic pressures. These include a cooling housing market, with national home prices falling for six consecutive months as of September, and higher borrowing costs. The Reserve Bank of Australia recently raised the cash rate to 4.6%, the highest level in 15 years, which impacts net interest margins and consumer credit growth.

Valuation metrics for the bank include its price-earnings (PE) ratio, which stood at approximately 27.1x based on FY24 earnings per share. Analysts also look to net interest margins (NIM) and workplace culture as indicators of long-term financial success. CBA’s workplace culture rating of 3.4/5 currently sits above the ASX banking sector average of 3.1.
