Commonwealth Fusion Systems secures $1 billion to advance ARC fusion power plant
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) announced a $1 billion equity financing round, bringing its total capital raised to over $2 billion. The funding will be used to move from its SPARC prototype in Massachusetts to the next‑generation ARC (Affordable, Robust, Compact) commercial‑scale fusion power plant planned for Chesterfield, Virginia. CEO Bob Mumgaard said the money will help de‑risk the design, expand the supply chain, retool internal manufacturing and prepare the site owned by Dominion Energy for construction, with a target to power up the 400‑megawatt facility in the early 2030s.
The investment reflects growing confidence in nuclear fusion as a clean‑energy solution and aligns with broader global efforts to develop net‑energy‑gain reactors. CFS has already secured many permits, filed an interconnection request with PJM, and is engaging with the local community as it prepares the Chesterfield site for future development.
