Commonwealth Games 2026 inclusion boosts African para‑athletes
The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature an integrated schedule that places para‑sports alongside able‑bodied events, with 47 para‑events across six sports. African athletes say the format is reshaping attitudes toward disability. Ugandan swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe noted that sport “is a huge pusher for change” and called for equal recognition and funding. Mauritian wheelchair racer Noemie Alphonse added that the Games showcase athletes on the same level and inspire national pride.
The Games were moved to Glasgow after the original host, Victoria in Australia, withdrew in July 2023 due to funding shortfalls, resulting in ten sports being cut. Despite the reduced program, the inclusive approach is praised as a milestone for para‑sport visibility and support in Africa.
