Commonwealth Games 2026 opens in Glasgow with Malaysia and Singapore delegations

The 2026 Commonwealth Games officially opened at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on 23 July, launching an 11‑day competition featuring roughly 3,000 athletes from 74 nations. Malaysia sent a contingent of 59 athletes and officials, while Singapore fielded 28 athletes across swimming, lawn bowling, weightlifting and 3x3 basketball.

Athletes highlighted the significance of the ceremony: swimmer Gan Ching Hwee said carrying the national flag was “a great honour and responsibility,” and para‑bowler Mawjit Singh Gurmet Singh, aged 62, expressed pride in representing his country at the opening. Both teams called on their home publics for strong support as they compete for medals throughout the Games, which will run until 2 August.
