Commonwealth Games see triathlon dropped and gymnastics risk

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will not include triathlon after the programme was drastically reduced when the original host, Victoria, Australia, withdrew over soaring costs. The downsized schedule cuts several sports, including road cycling, hockey sevens, badminton and squash. World Triathlon said it was disappointed but emphasized the decision does not set a precedent for future Games.

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Northern Irish gymnast Rhys McClenaghan missed the pommel‑horse podium after attempting a new, risky skill that the judges did not credit. He explained, "It didn't get off to a great start. The judges didn't credit my mount… I need to make it undeniably good." McClenaghan said the performance is a stepping stone toward defending his Olympic title at the 2028 Los Angeles Games and will also compete at the upcoming European Championships.
