Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group praises Tanzania reconciliation efforts

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) has commended the government of Tanzania for its cooperation and the steps taken to facilitate reconciliation in Zanzibar. During its 74th meeting held in New York, the committee recognized these actions as a solid foundation for further democratic and political progress within the country.

The meeting, chaired by Malta’s Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Chris Fearne, included high-level representatives from various member states, including Samoa, Antigua and Barbuda, Botswana, Canada, Grenada, Malaysia, Mauritius, and Zambia. The group assessed issues regarding member nations, specifically Tanzania and Uganda, to strengthen democracy and good governance.

While acknowledging positive developments, CMAG emphasized the need for continued work to ensure inclusive and transparent multi-party political dialogue, alongside the protection of civil, political, and media freedoms. The Tanzanian delegation was led by Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Dr. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi.
