Commonwealth responds to concerns over Imran Khan's treatment

The Commonwealth Secretariat has responded to concerns raised by Lord Jack Goldsmith regarding the treatment and detention of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. In a letter signed by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the organization stated it is aware of the concerns and remains committed to promoting democratic processes, human rights, and the rule of law within all member states, including Pakistan.

Lord Goldsmith, a member of the British House of Lords, criticized the Commonwealth's response as insufficient. He had previously appealed for intervention, citing discrepancies in Khan's medical care. Goldsmith alleged that despite a Supreme Court order for Khan to be evaluated by an independent medical panel at Shifa International Hospital, he was instead taken to a government institute and declared medically fit without access to his personal physicians.

Goldsmith also raised concerns regarding Khan's deteriorating physical and mental health due to prolonged isolation, as well as restrictions placed on his family and legal counsel. While the Commonwealth Secretariat confirmed it maintains constructive communication with Pakistan to uphold shared values, it did not provide specific details on ongoing discussions regarding Khan's legal cases or outline future actions.
