Communication habits that impact interpersonal relationships

Effective communication relies heavily on how messages are delivered rather than just the accuracy of the content. Common conversational habits that can damage interpersonal relationships include starting sentences with negative words, interrupting others with “but,” and forcefully redirecting conversations back to oneself.

Another critical factor is the use of subjects in speech. Using “you” as a subject can make the listener feel judged or attacked, triggering a defensive response. In contrast, utilizing “we” fosters a sense of teamwork and collaborative problem-solving.

To improve social interactions, experts suggest using affirmative responses before offering differing opinions, practicing active listening through facial expressions and nodding, and pausing to allow others to finish their thoughts. Visualizing one's own habits by writing down frequent negative phrases can also help in making conscious adjustments to improve rapport.
