Communist Party of Greece criticizes EU historical stance

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has issued a sharp critique of the European Union and the European Commission regarding the observance of August 23 as the ‘European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes’.

The KKE’s European Parliament group described the equating of communism and fascism as an ‘unhistorical construct’. They argued that this approach attempts to distort the historical reality of World War II by equating the victims of Nazism with their executioners.

The party linked its position to the memory of the 200 communists executed in Kaisariani on May 1, 1944, stating that their sacrifice serves as a response to efforts to equate communism with fascism. Furthermore, the KKE accused the EU of using such commemorations to present its values as serving peace while allegedly participating in imperialist conflicts.
