KPÖ's Elke Kahr Scores Major Victory in Graz Municipal Election

The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) led by incumbent mayor Elke Kahr won the Graz municipal election with approximately 36 % of the vote, a gain of about 7 percentage points from 2021. The party secured 18 seats on the city council, becoming the largest force in Austria’s second‑largest city. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) finished second with around 25 % of the vote, followed by the Greens at roughly 14 %, the Freedom Party (FPÖ) at 12 %, the Social Democrats (SPÖ) at 6 % and the NEOS at about 5 %. Voter turnout was low, at 48.8 %, down from 54 % in the previous election.

Kahr’s personal popularity was highlighted by her practice of donating two‑thirds of her mayoral salary to social causes. Analysts noted that the result reflects broad approval of the KPÖ’s municipal policies, including the construction of 420 new communal housing units and investments in public transport. The existing coalition of KPÖ, Greens and SPÖ appears viable, though coalition talks will await final seat allocations.

Political commentators described Graz as an “uncontested bastion of the Communist Party” within a largely conservative Styria region, underscoring the uniqueness of a left‑wing party’s dominance in an Austrian city.
