Communities in Uruguay and Mexico navigate housing recovery and displacement
In Campo de Todos, Uruguay, recovery efforts are underway following a severe storm that caused significant damage to local homes. Eight houses have already been re-roofed, allowing families to return, while MEVIR is working on nine additional properties. Two homes were completely destroyed and require reconstruction. The recovery process involves the Intendencia de Salto, MEVIR, local producers, and community members who have contributed materials and labor.
In Mexico City, residents of the Cuba 11 building are working toward recovering their homes after more than a year of protesting an eviction. Angélica Gómez Padilla, a resident, described the period of staying in street protests as a difficult and exhausting process of neighborhood organization. The families have received support from civil society collectives, which provided food, materials, and assistance during their demonstrations following the publication of an expropriation decree.
