Communities observe International Overdose Awareness Day

Communities across the United States observed International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 with events focused on education and harm reduction.

In Boston, the Codman Square Health Center commemorated the day by unveiling a new vending machine designed to provide low-barrier access to essential supplies. In partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission and the state Department of Public Health, the machine dispenses free Naloxone (Narcan), hygiene kits, socks, snacks, and water. Officials noted that while the Dorchester area remains heavily impacted, state-level opiate overdose deaths saw a decrease in 2025 compared to 2022 levels.

In North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, the organization Recovery Revolution hosted an annual event at Wilkesboro Commons. The gathering brought together families, individuals in recovery, first responders, and community leaders under the theme ‘Empower. Educate. Advocate.’ to share stories of loss and recovery.
