Community banks adopt digital payment and stablecoin solutions
Community banks are increasingly looking toward digital payment infrastructure and stablecoins to remain competitive with larger financial institutions. While many smaller banks lack the resources to mint their own stablecoins, they are seeking ways to offer digital payment services to prevent customers from migrating to larger banks with superior technology.
Coinbase and the payment infrastructure firm Moov have partnered to provide stablecoin payment solutions via Coinbase’s Payments API, targeting over 1,000 community banks and credit unions. This allows smaller institutions to offer real-time payments and merchant acceptance without building the underlying technical infrastructure themselves.
In response to industry shifts, a coalition of 39 state banking associations formed the BankChain Alliance in August 2026. This group aims to develop an industry-owned blockchain framework focused on programmable payments and tokenized deposits, with a target launch for a working network in 2027.
Despite concerns that stablecoins might drain deposits, data indicates that community bank deposits grew by approximately 26% between 2019 and 2026. Research suggests there is no statistically significant relationship between the growth of stablecoins and outflows from community bank deposits.
