Community cancer awareness and fundraising initiatives expand

Various community organizations and individuals in the United States are conducting fundraising and awareness initiatives to support cancer patients and survivors.

In Lewistown, the nonprofit Pink Connection held a sold-out Sunday brunch fundraiser to honor survivors and remember those lost to the disease. The organization provides monthly support groups, “Bundles of Hope” gift boxes for newly diagnosed patients, and financial assistance for groceries, gas, or prescriptions. Additionally, Mifflin County residents Mary Pollock and Amy Morgan have raised over $50,000 since 2021 through the Pledge the Pink fundraising walk, with more than $31,000 directed to the breast care center at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.

In Perry County, the Perry County Cancer Alliance is hosting its annual cancer awareness vigil. The event includes entertainment, awards, and a candlelight vigil to recognize those battling cancer and honor those who have passed. Since 1999, the Alliance has distributed $2.3 million to individuals in Perry County experiencing cancer.
