Community disputes arise in Santa María, Chile and Peru
In Santa María, Chile, a landowner has closed a private perimeter that was being used as an informal path to a hill, sparking conflict with neighbors. José Maldini Hauva, representing the property owner, stated that the path is not a public road according to official certifications. He noted that affected residents have alternative exits, though they are in poor condition, and urged the local municipality to improve existing roads or address illegal settlements to provide better access.
In a separate incident in the Santa María neighborhood of Juliaca, Peru, residents staged a protest by chaining themselves together to demand the completion of the Parque del Centenario. The project, originally scheduled for 240 days, has exceeded 500 days without completion. Protesters criticized the Municipalidad Provincial de San Román for approving six deadline extensions, with the latest pushing completion to September 2026. As of mid-August, the project showed a physical progress of 53.86% despite a financial progress of 71.82 much.
