Global environmental efforts focus on coastal cleanup and habitat restoration
Various regions are undertaking environmental cleanup and restoration efforts to combat pollution and habitat degradation. In Chile, volunteers and organizations participated in International Coastal Cleanup Day, notably in Iquique, where over 200 people collected nearly one ton of waste from Playa Brava. Similar efforts occurred in Aysén and Porvenir, with Aysén reporting a decrease in waste volume due to improved environmental education.
In Mexico, authorities have begun cleaning the San Julián lagoon to restore its status as a Ramsar wetland, focusing on removing invasive aquatic vegetation. Meanwhile, research presented in Paraguay by Inia Magallanes highlights progress in restoring Patagonian grasslands through soil protection strategies.
In Spain, the municipality of La Línea de la Concepción is receiving 90,000 euros to manage the impact of invasive Asian algae, which has seen over 550 tons removed this year. Other local issues include reports of poor maintenance and waste accumulation at Pacu Cuá beach in Paraguay and in public plazas in Alicante, Spain.
