Community groups mobilize for autonomy in Mexico and Venezuela

In Michoacán, Mexico, residents of Opopeo marched to the Salvador Escalante municipal headquarters to protest against the local government. The community leaders demand that the municipal president cease political interference in their autonomous processes and respect their self-governance decisions. Protesters claim the administration has opposed indigenous collective rights and has used administrative inconsistencies to delay the transfer of budgets previously approved through community consultations.

In Venezuela, authorities in Calabozo, Guárico state, are conducting assemblies to renew communal councils. This territorial deployment aims to update community spokespersons and consolidate local self-management. The process is being carried out under the strategic guidelines of national and state leadership to strengthen participatory democracy structures in both urban and rural sectors of the Sebastián Francisco de Miranda municipality.
