Community Initiatives Boost Water Management in Ecuador and Colombia

In Rumipata, Pilahuín (Ecuador), local residents participated in a technical meeting on water flow monitoring and a business plan to cultivate native mortiño berries. The session, part of the regional Páramo Management Plan, reviewed monthly flow data, discussed responsible water use, and presented adjustments to the project’s work matrix to support sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation.

Meanwhile, in the Cauca region of Colombia, volunteers planted 800 native trees—including nacedero, caracolí and guama—along the El Otoval stream in the Caparrozal and El Guanábano villages. The reforestation effort, organized by the local agricultural and environmental secretariat, community nursery, and NGOs, aims to protect water sources, restore ecosystems, and improve soil stability for rural communities.

Both projects illustrate how rural communities are taking active roles in safeguarding water resources through collaborative planning, reforestation, and sustainable land‑use practices.
