Community initiatives in Indonesia address waste and hygiene

Community-led initiatives in Indonesia are addressing waste management and hygiene through localized environmental and health programs.

In Bekasi, West Java, the Pejuang Mushola group, in collaboration with Unilever Indonesia, conducted a cleaning and health education drive at the Al-Hidayah prayer room in Bantar Gebang. Located near large waste sites, the initiative focused on teaching Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), providing practical guidance on personal hygiene such as proper handwashing, tooth brushing, and bathing techniques to help residents maintain health despite their surroundings.

In Bantul, Yogyakarta, the TPS 3R GO-SARI facility has transformed waste management into a productive economic model. Managing approximately 3 to 3.5 tons of household waste daily, the facility processes refuse into compost, livestock feed, and recycled materials. The program serves 1,500 households and employs 27 local residents, generating a monthly income of approximately Rp 98 million. Supported by Pertamina Patra Niaga, the initiative utilizes organic waste for Black Soldier Fly maggot cultivation and converts HDPE plastics into eco-friendly furniture.
