Community leader Reuben Owie killed by gunmen in Edo State
An 85-year-old community leader, Hon. Reuben Owie, was killed by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhunhun, Benin City, Edo State. Owie served as the Secretary of the Iyowa Community.
The attack occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Two assailants reportedly gained access to the home on Abu Street, where one of the gunmen shot Owie in the head, causing his death.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident following a report from the victim's son, Osayomwanbo Owie. ASP Eno Ikoedem, the command's Public Relations Officer, stated that detectives have visited the scene to document evidence and recover the body. The deceased's remains were moved to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). Police investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects.
