Community literacy initiatives and the benefits of family reading

Maria Helena Brusamolin shares her lifelong passion for reading, which began in childhood with books such as the Arsène Lupin collection and Munro Leaf’s ‘The Story of Ferdinand’. Driven by a desire to disseminate knowledge and culture, she transitioned from donating books to public libraries, schools, and prisons to creating a community street library at her home gate.

Supported by a repurposed shoe rack provided by her neighbor, Mônica, the initiative allows passersby to select and take books for free without the requirement of repayment or return.

In a related context regarding literacy, experts emphasize the importance of family reading for child development. Shared reading is noted for strengthening emotional bonds, expanding vocabulary, and stimulating creativity more effectively than digital media. Educators suggest that consistency and quality of time are more vital than the total number of hours spent reading to establish a lifelong habit.
