Community maggot cultivation programs target organic waste in Indonesia

Communities in Indonesia are implementing maggot cultivation programs to manage organic waste and create economic value.

In Paya Pinang Village, Medan, a student community service group from UIN Sumatera Utara introduced maggot farming as an alternative for organic waste management. The initiative includes the construction of maggot houses and community socialization to ensure the program's sustainability by local government and residents. Local citizens noted that the practice helps clean up food waste while potentially providing additional income.

Similarly, in Kembangputihan, Bantul, residents are utilizing kitchen scraps to feed maggots through the Plasma Masayu program. While the primary goal is to solve the issue of household organic waste, the sale of the maggots contributes to the community's local funds. This program operates in collaboration with TPS 3R Guwosari and receives support from PT Penjaminan Infrastruktur Indonesia and local authorities.
