Community of Madrid highlights tourism from historic villages to water recreation

Puebla de la Sierra, a small municipality in the northern part of the Community of Madrid and within the Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve, offers historic attractions such as the 16th‑century forge, the parish of the Purísima Concepción, and a 1564 hermitage with an Arab‑style fountain. The town has recently opened a Japanese museum in collaboration with artist Federico Eguía, adding an international cultural dimension to the village.

The region also promotes water‑based leisure, designating five authorised natural swimming zones. The San Juan reservoir hosts the El Muro and Virgen de la Nueva beaches, the only reservoir in the community allowing motorised water sports. Additional spots include the Alberche beach at Aldea del Fresno, the Presillas in the Lozoya river, and the El Atazar reservoir, all supporting activities such as kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and guided barranquismo, with water quality monitored regularly.
