Community programs support addiction recovery in Argentina and Mexico

Community-based organizations in Argentina and Mexico are providing structured support for individuals recovering from addiction and homelessness.

In Córdoba, Argentina, the Centro Barrial Mamantula, part of the Hogar de Cristo, utilizes a four-stage process known as ‘umbrales’ (thresholds) to assist women. The program moves from initial refuge and habit recovery to a phase of emotional reflection and history-making, concluding with a service stage where advanced participants mentor new arrivals. The center integrates spiritual moments, collective dialogue, and community activities such as workshops and sports for local children.

In Mexico, the missionary organization Hope of the Poor works to assist individuals transitioning from street life and substance abuse toward stable living. Recent efforts involving missionaries from the Diocese of Chicago included food distribution near the Basilica of Guadalupe and community engagement with families. The organization focuses on addressing psychological issues and addiction to help individuals become productive members of society.
