Community projects transform UK hospital spaces into therapeutic gardens
Community-led initiatives in the United Kingdom have resulted in the creation of specialized outdoor spaces designed to aid patient recovery and support children with complex health needs.
At Firvale, a respite centre within Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, a garden was transformed to support children and young people aged 0 to 18 with significant lifelong disabilities. The project was led by the charity WellChild as part of its ‘Helping Hands’ programme, with volunteer support from CEF. The initiative aims to provide an enriching environment for children to thrive alongside their families.
In a separate project, a concrete courtyard at the Jean Heyes Reablement Unit, part of the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been converted into a rehabilitation garden. Led by Greenmount Projects through the Match My Project platform, the space features equipment such as an outdoor step set with bilateral rails to help patients practice mobility in a safe environment. The project involved various local contractors and will include maintenance support from students at Wigan & Leigh College.
