Community recycling initiatives expand in Venezuela and Cuba
Community-led environmental and recycling initiatives are being implemented in Venezuela and Cuba. In the Iribarren Municipality of Venezuela, the municipal company Junreca, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, conducted an eco-exchange and sanitation day at the TEL Nueva Segovia school in El Ujano. Residents and students exchanged recyclable materials, such as PET plastic, cardboard, and paper, for school supply kits. Junreca also launched a new website and Android application to allow citizens to track their accumulated recycling benefits in real time.
In Vertientes, Cuba, the popular movement ‘Mi Barrio por la Patria’ is driving the collection of raw materials, including plastic, aluminum, glass, and ferrous metals. Supported by community work groups and local recovery companies, the initiative aims to promote environmental care and material reuse. While the movement has helped collect over 690 tons of raw materials nationwide this year, officials noted that targets for steel and paper have not yet been met.
