Community sports initiatives expand ice skating access in the Netherlands
Various community sports initiatives are enhancing ice skating accessibility in the Netherlands. In Dukenburg, the Nijmeegse Schaats Vereniging (NSV) continues its ‘Schaats-jij-al?’ program at the Triavium. For over 20 years, this initiative has provided five-week introductory courses for children aged 7 to 10, helping hundreds of participants learn basic skating skills. The program has previously hosted Olympic gold medalist Teun Boer.
In Siddeburen, four local organizations—IJsvereniging Eendracht, Motorsportclub Siddeburen, Tennisvereniging Siddeburen, and Dynamictennisvereniging Siddeburen—have collaborated to repurpose a facility at TV Siddeburen. They are converting a court into an 18 by 36-meter ice rink designed for rapid setup when temperatures drop. The facility is intended for multi-use, serving as a venue for dynamic tennis and badminton during non-winter months.
