Community support initiatives focus on adolescence and grief in Papendrecht and Geraardsbergen

Community initiatives in the Netherlands and Belgium are providing specialized support for families navigating adolescence and grief.

In Papendrecht, the municipality is hosting a free interactive evening titled ‘De Rol van je Leven’ at Theater De Willem on November 18. Aimed at parents of children in primary school and early secondary school, the event uses regietheater to explore the challenges of puberty, social media influence, and setting boundaries. Mayor Margreet van Driel noted the value of exploring these topics together, as there is no manual for parenting adolescents. The event includes practical workshops following a theatrical performance.

In Geraardsbergen, several initiatives assist children and families dealing with loss. The city offers five free ‘comfort spots’ for reflection and mourning. Local libraries provide specialized resources, including ‘grief suitcases’ and ‘emotion suitcases’ for families and schools to facilitate discussions about loss and social-emotional development. Additionally, the organization Reveil provides science-based lesson packages for secondary education to help students understand grief and how to offer comfort to others.
