Community Transport Schemes in Wales and Scotland Seek Volunteers

The Knighton & Area Community Transport Scheme in Wales, formed in August 2022, relies on volunteers to drive residents to medical appointments and other essential services across Knighton and surrounding villages. The scheme recently received an electric car donated by local soft‑drink maker Radnor Hills and is urgently recruiting drivers, coordinators and social‑media volunteers, offering drivers a mileage rate of 45p.

In Scotland, the Highland Council has opened its Community Transport Grant for 2027‑2030, inviting community groups to apply for funding that supports rural transport solutions such as volunteer driver networks and demand‑responsive services. Council officials highlighted the role of the grants in reducing isolation and enabling access to health, work and education, citing support for 29 existing organisations and endorsements from councillor Ken Gowans and scheme coordinator Peter Fenton.
