Community Tree‑Planting Initiatives Mark World Environment Day in Brazil and Portugal

On 5 June, residents, social movements and community organisations in the Grande Belém area of Brazil planted trees in the neighbourhoods of Terra Firme, Castanheira and Quilombo do Abacatal. The action, part of the “Rebele‑se. Plante uma Árvore” campaign, involved planting species such as cupuaçu, bacuri, pau‑preto, amora and bacaba and included the launch of a free Community Gardener Manual to guide urban arborisation.

In Portugal, the municipality of Santarém celebrated World Environment Day by delivering 65 native trees to two local families under the “Rede de Famílias com Raízes” project. The families will plant the trees on their own land and commit to preserving them for 50 years, contributing to carbon sequestration and the region’s goal of carbon‑neutrality by 2050, in line with the European Green Deal.
