Como celebrates patron saint Sant’Abbondio with special basilica access

The Church of Como is preparing to celebrate the solemnity of Sant’Abbondio, the patron saint of the city and the diocese. The festivities, scheduled for August 30 and 31, will center on the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio and the Cathedral.

As part of the celebrations, the Basilica will offer extraordinary access to certain areas that are typically closed to the public. The events include liturgical services and a traditional message from Cardinal Oscar Cantoni to the city.

Historically, Sant’Abbondio was the fourth bishop of Como. In 450 AD, he was sent by Pope Leo the Great to Constantinople to defend the doctrine of the Incarnation, helping to pave the way for the Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD. Following missions in Northern Italy, he returned to Como to evangelize the region.
