Jesus in Nazareth: Gospel account of rejection in hometown
The Gospel of Luke (4:16-30) describes Jesus visiting the synagogue in Nazareth, his hometown. During the service, he read from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, identifying himself as the one anointed to bring good news to the poor, liberty to captives, and sight to the blind.
While the congregation initially marveled at his words, they soon questioned his identity, asking, ‘Is this not the son of Joseph?’ Jesus responded by noting that ‘no prophet is well received in his own country,’ citing historical examples of Elijah and Elisha performing miracles for foreigners rather than Israelites.
This response incited anger among the local inhabitants. The crowd attempted to drive him out of the city and cast him off a cliff, but the text records that Jesus passed through the crowd and continued on his way.
