Como implements new ZTL restrictions on bicycles and deliveries

Italian cities are increasingly implementing restrictions on bicycles and scooters in historic centers to protect pedestrians, monuments, and manage tourist flows. In Como, new regulations for the “Verde” urban pedestrian area limit goods deliveries to a window between 6:00 and 11:00, with private home deliveries permitted between 19:00 and 22:00.

Local merchants have expressed significant concern regarding these new ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) rules, arguing that the narrow delivery windows create logistical difficulties, particularly for those traveling from outside the city or businesses like pharmacies that require multiple deliveries per day. While Mayor Rapinese has urged businesses to organize within the new framework to prioritize pedestrian safety, commerce representatives are calling for further dialogue with the municipality.

Similar trends are visible across Europe and Italy. Venice and Capri enforce strict bans on bicycles in their historic cores, while cities like Florence, Siena, and various locations around Lake Garda have implemented rules requiring cyclists to dismount or face specific restrictions in high-traffic areas.
