Como Mayor bans bicycle riding on 30 streets after personal collision

Alessandro Rapinese, the mayor of Como, Italy, has announced a ban on riding bicycles in approximately 30 streets within the city’s historic center. Starting next month, cyclists using both electric and traditional pedal bikes will be required to dismount and walk through the affected areas.

The decision follows a July incident in which Rapinese was struck by an e-bike while leaving city hall in the rain. The mayor admitted that his personal experience influenced the measure, describing the e-bike as a “beast” that “mowed him down.” He stated that while critics claim the move is personal, he believes the action is necessary for public safety, particularly in tourist-heavy areas.

The ruling has faced significant backlash from residents and local organizations. Critics argue the ban removes an eco-friendly, low-cost transportation option and could negatively impact local businesses by hindering delivery drivers. Local civic groups, including Nova Como, have organized protests, including a planned bike ride to city hall on September 12, to oppose the measure.
