Como residents denounce municipal neglect and accessibility barriers

Residents in Como, Italy, are raising alarms regarding municipal inaction concerning urban maintenance and accessibility. A couple living with visual impairments, Domenico Cataldo and Michela Barrasso, issued an open letter to local officials denouncing the lack of tactile paths, audible traffic lights, and protected routes. They report that architectural barriers and the inconsiderate behavior of other citizens, such as vehicles parked on sidewalks, pose significant safety risks to those unable to see hazards.

Separately, local journalist Massimo Vacchi has reported a year-long failure by the municipality to address a noisy manhole cover on via Scalabrini. Despite multiple formal complaints sent via certified email (PEC) since October 2025, the issue remains unresolved, causing significant sleep disturbances for local residents. Vacchi noted that the technical office has only indicated that an investigation into the ownership of the manholes is being prepared.
