Violent clashes erupt in Como city centre, police make multiple arrests

A series of disturbances unfolded in Como over the weekend. On Saturday night, a group of around thirty youths gathered on Via Garibaldi, playing loud music from a large speaker. Tensions rose, leading to shoving and a near‑riot before police were called; a mother attempted to calm the crowd and the gathering dispersed without injuries.

Later, at Parco Sant’Elia near Piazza Volta, six men armed with broken bottles and pepper‑spray engaged in a fight. Police arrived, disarmed a 21‑year‑old with a taser and arrested four individuals – three Cameroonians and an Ivorian – for assault, and detained two Moroccan men for resisting officers.

Earlier in the week, an ex‑partner dispute in a street near Piazza Indipendenza escalated when the man grabbed the woman’s arm. Residents alerted authorities; the man fled on a scooter and was later detained for investigation under “red‑code” procedures.

Local political figures, including PD leaders, cited these incidents as evidence of a security problem in the city centre, urging a stronger police presence, better youth policies and improved urban design. Police continue to investigate the events and have charged several participants with assault and related offences.
