Compact Disc maintains relevance despite shrinking industrial drive production

The Compact Disc (CD) maintains relevance in a streaming-dominated market, though it is not experiencing a full renaissance. While demand remains steady in specific sectors and millions of discs exist in private collections, the industrial infrastructure for producing high-quality optical drives has significantly diminished.

In the high-end audio segment, specialized manufacturers are increasingly responsible for developing their own drive architectures to ensure the long-term viability of CD and Super Audio CD (SACD) products. This scarcity of high-quality mechanical components presents challenges for the industry.

Despite these manufacturing hurdles, hardware such as the Marantz CD6007 continues to be available, offering features like USB playback for high-resolution files and headphone connectivity, reflecting the ongoing integration of physical media into modern HiFi systems.
