Compagnie des phosphates de Gafsa workers begin three-day strike
Employees and management at the Compagnie des phosphates de Gafsa (CPG) began a three-day strike on September 1, 2026. Organized by the Union générale tunisienne du travail (UGTT), the movement involves a reported 95% participation rate across all administrative services and work sites.
The strike, scheduled to run through September 3, is driven by several key demands. Workers are calling for the immediate implementation of previously concluded agreements, the activation of salary increases, and the payment of outstanding dues, including productivity bonuses unpaid for two years. Additionally, the union is seeking the integration of salary increases from 2015, 2016, and 2017 into base pay.
Beyond financial compensation, the UGTT emphasized that the movement aims to address workplace safety, working conditions, and worker dignity. Specific demands include the provision of functional equipment and measures to ensure the company's long-term financial stability. The union also requested a six-month suspension of debt collection and an end to the use of the ‘Ajir’ system.
