Compagnie Maritime Nantaise to build new space logistics vessel

Compagnie Maritime Nantaise (MN), a subsidiary of the Sogestran group, has announced the construction of a new hybrid-propulsion roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel dedicated to space logistics. Expected to enter service by 2030, the ship is designed to support the growth of the European space sector, specifically to facilitate the transport of Vega-C rocket components and satellites for the Italian manufacturer Avio.

The vessel will feature advanced sustainable technology, including three automated OceanWings wind sails and the capability to run on biofuel, which is intended to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 30 percent. To ensure safe passage through the shallow Kourou River to the port of Pariacabo in French Guiana, the ship will be designed with a very limited draft, similar to its sister ship, the Canopée.

In addition to wind assistance, the ship will include specialized cargo areas with controlled ambient conditions to protect sensitive industrial equipment and strategic components for the Ariane 6 program.
