Compagnie Sucrière Sénégalaise diversifies crops in Richard-Toll

The Compagnie Sucrière Sénégalaise (CSS) has expanded its agricultural activities in Richard-Toll by planting 145 hectares of forage cowpea. This initiative aims to support local livestock farmers by providing high-protein feed for cattle and small ruminants.

Beyond providing nutrition for livestock, the choice of cowpea offers agronomic benefits, as the legume helps enrich the soil by fixing nitrogen. The project has received support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock, with local veterinary officials describing the move as a relief for the region's pastoralists.

CSS has invested significantly in this diversification, including the acquisition of specialized equipment such as a seeder costing over 20 million CFA francs. The company intends to scale this operation significantly, with ambitions to expand cultivation to more than 600 hectares in future campaigns.
