AI‑Native Software Teams Set to Shrink as Firms Adopt Tiny Engineering Units by 2029

Gartner forecasts that by 2029, 60% of organisations will run AI‑native software engineering teams that are markedly smaller than today’s typical groups, up from just 15% in 2026. The rise of “tiny teams” – usually four to five specialists and increasingly two to three – is driven by AI’s ability to automate routine coding and testing tasks, freeing engineers to concentrate on product innovation, complex problem‑solving and business outcomes.

Aliyah Camacho, principal analyst at Gartner, explains that these compact units will still need a mix of skills – product management, user‑experience design, and AI‑focused engineering – and will rely on robust platform‑engineering functions that provide standardised development environments, automated workflows and self‑service AI tools. The shift is not presented as a cost‑cutting measure but as a structural reorganisation that pairs human expertise with generative‑AI capabilities.

The firm warns that organisations should avoid reducing junior hiring as a short‑term efficiency gain. Cutting entry‑level positions could erode knowledge‑transfer pipelines and increase dependence on higher‑paid senior talent, weakening the long‑term talent pool for software development.
