Compass Group catering error causes anaphylactic reaction in child

A three-year-old child with a milk allergy suffered an anaphylactic reaction at a daycare in Paimio, Finland, after being served mashed potatoes containing milk. The incident occurred in August, shortly after the child had returned to daycare following summer holidays.

Despite the family having provided specific dietary requirements and the child being assigned a labeled meal, a service provider error led to the incorrect food being served. Daycare staff administered an EpiPen and contacted emergency services when the child's condition worsened.

Compass Group, the catering company recently appointed to the daycare, attributed the incident to a human error in portioning and clarified that there had been ambiguities in the markings. The company has since conducted an investigation and updated its operating procedures. The child's father expressed ongoing anxiety regarding mealtime safety following the event.
