Complexo da Maré police operation leaves three dead and triggers highway blockade

A major police operation in the Complexo da Maré, targeting the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) faction, resulted in at least three deaths and numerous injuries on Monday. Approximately 200 officers from specialized units, including BOPE, were deployed to combat drug trafficking and illegal arms circulation in the Timbau and Baixa do Sapateiro communities.

In retaliation to the police action, armed criminals intercepted two school buses belonging to Escola Eleva on the Linha Vermelha highway. The criminals used the vehicles as barricades to block traffic and divert police attention. While the students, approximately 120 in total, were not physically harmed, the incident caused significant tension and briefly closed the highway for about an hour.

The operation led to the seizure of 12 rifles, eight pistols, grenades, and 83kg of drugs, along with the recovery of six vehicles. The violence also impacted local services, with 41 schools and several health units in the region suspending operations due to the security situation.
