Complexul Energetic Valea Jiului faces insolvency requests
Romania's Minister of Energy, Dumitru Chisăliță, has issued an urgent appeal for financial support to address the severe liquidity crisis facing the state-owned Complexul Energetic Valea Jiului. The company is struggling to cover salaries, utilities, and other financial obligations, leading several creditors to request that the Hunedoara Tribunal initiate insolvency proceedings.
While the court has not yet opened the insolvency procedure, a hearing is scheduled for January 19, 2027. Creditors including TMG Guard SRL, Gerom Internațional SA, and Pro Tehnic SRL have filed requests to recover outstanding debts. The company is also facing challenges regarding the safety and timely closure of the Lonea and Lupeni mines, with critical deadlines approaching in late 2026.
The government has approved a state aid package of approximately 349.9 million lei for 2026 to support the energy complex, which employs over 2,000 people. Minister Chisăliță warned that without immediate intervention, the financial instability could pose significant risks to public safety and social stability.
