Comprehensive training hospitals form consultative body in South Korea

Comprehensive training hospitals in South Korea have officially launched a consultative body to advocate for improved institutional status and increased financial support. The group aims to address the growing economic burden as hospitals transition from a resident-dependent model to a specialist-centered medical system.

Members of the consultative body argue that current government support is disproportionately concentrated on tertiary general hospitals. They highlight significant disparities in medical quality evaluation support and intensive care unit subsidies compared to their roles in providing regional essential, emergency, and severe patient care.

The group has proposed a tiered support system for secondary general hospitals, categorizing them into hub-type, bridge-type, and foundation-type hospitals based on their specific functions. This structure is intended to ensure that hub-type hospitals can effectively serve as regional centers for high-difficulty medical services and training. The consultative body plans to engage with the government and National Assembly to secure sustainable financial frameworks and institutional reforms.
