Computer science graduates pivot to AI skills amid shifting job market

The job market for computer science graduates is shifting as the previous coding boom fades. Recent graduates in computer science and computer engineering face an elevated jobless rate of approximately 7.1%, a figure that contrasts with higher employment rates seen in some non-technical majors such as philosophy and art history.

As artificial intelligence begins to handle more software development tasks, entry-level positions are becoming harder to secure. In response, colleges are adapting by bolstering training in AI tools and implementing business-specific internships.

While major tech giants are hiring less, smaller businesses are increasingly seeking graduates to act as ‘evangelists’ or specialists to help them integrate AI into their operations. This shift requires new graduates to possess the ability to operate on the technological frontier to navigate a market characterized by significant industry churn and layoffs.
