Comsol enters South African wholesale 5G home broadband market

South African connectivity provider Comsol is entering the home broadband market as a wholesale 5G-Advanced fixed wireless access (FWA) infrastructure provider. The company will not sell directly to consumers; instead, it will provide network access to internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), who will manage branding, pricing, and customer support.

The expansion is supported by new shareholders Platform Investment Partners and Wimsey Capital, following the exit of Nedbank Private Equity. Additional growth capital is being provided by Convergence Partners, Solcon Capital, and founder and CEO Iain Stevenson. RMB arranged the funding solution to support the company’s strategic capital expenditure plan.

Comsol has already deployed infrastructure covering over one million households in Gauteng and aims for full coverage in that province by March 2027. The company plans to expand into the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and other major regional centers throughout 2027 and 2028. The long-term goal is to establish a national network of approximately 2,000 base stations to serve suburban and less densely populated areas where fibre-to-the-home is not economically viable.
