Comté cheese faces cholesterol concerns amid record French cheese consumption

In France, about one‑fifth of adults have elevated cholesterol levels, prompting health experts to examine the impact of high‑fat cheeses. Comté, a cheese from the Jura region, has become the favourite of roughly 44 % of French respondents, overtaking camembert in recent surveys. While its rich flavor is celebrated, its high saturated‑fat content raises questions about suitability for people with high cholesterol.

National consumption data show that French cheese intake varies widely by department. The Haut‑Rhin leads the country, with residents eating more than 30 kg of cheese per person each year. It is followed by Loire‑Atlantique (≈29.8 kg), Savoie (≈29.2 kg), Jura (≈28.7 kg) and several Alpine departments where local varieties such as Comté, Reblochon and Beaufort dominate the market. These regional patterns highlight both cultural preferences and the potential health implications of heavy cheese consumption.
