Cona Hospital surgeons save six-year-old boy's eye after severe trauma
Surgeons at the Cona Hospital in Ferrara successfully performed a highly complex ophthalmic surgery to save the eye of a six-year-old boy following a severe ocular trauma. The child was urgently transported via helicopter from Belluno to the specialized pediatric retina unit at the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Ferrara.
The multi-hour procedure, led by Professor Marco Mura, required advanced vitreoretinal surgery techniques. The medical team performed a vitrectomy to remove gelatinous material from inside the eye and a lensectomy to remove the damaged lens. Additionally, surgeons reconstructed the ocular wall and the iris to restore light regulation. The success of the operation was supported by a pediatric anesthesia team led by Dr. Milo Vason.
Regional officials, including President Michele de Pascale and Health Councilor Massimo Fabi, praised the intervention, citing it as a demonstration of the vital importance of the public healthcare system in managing complex and urgent medical emergencies.
